Ørsted

Ørsted, the global market leader in offshore wind energy, developed the Dutch wind farm Borssele 12 with the mission to create a world that runs on green energy. The European Union, through its Fit-for-55 package, aims to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 and requires 40% of our energy to come from renewable sources. Offshore wind energy plays a crucial role in this. Hague supports Ørsted in strengthening the demand for wind energy by building coalitions within the industry, positioning Ørsted, and offering solutions to both local and national politicians.

Building Coalitions

The industry needs green energy to become more sustainable. However, Ørsted observes that the demand and supply of wind energy are not aligned. The energy plans have been assigned by the government in the National Energy System Plan. The National Program for Industrial Sustainability (NPVI), a program that closely collaborates with various public and private stakeholders through six industrial clusters, was established to accelerate the sustainability of the industry. In bringing together the supply and demand for sustainable energy, it is important to discuss these two plans in conjunction with politicians, green energy providers, and the industry. By being active within the various industrial clusters, Ørsted contributes to the dialogue with potential industrial consumers to also emphasize the role of the government in this transition challenge. Maintaining this constant dialogue is essential for the energy transition and Ørsted’s business.

Positioning

The biodiversity and climate crisis are closely connected, and Ørsted addresses both issues with energy projects that have a net positive effect on biodiversity. Ørsted is thus a pioneer in investing in innovations, ecology, and new maintenance methods, and aims to further expand this leadership position. To strengthen the visibility of these themes, Hague advises Ørsted on how to best position its energy projects within the stakeholder landscape and politics. Examples of Ørsted’s initiatives include oyster structures that promote reef formation and biodiversity in wind farms, and quieter installation methods for offshore wind foundations.

Offering Solutions to Politics

To promote the greening of the Dutch (and European) industry and make sufficient green energy from offshore wind available, financing is needed across the entire chain, from developer to consumer. Hague has supported Ørsted in drafting a position paper on Ørsted’s vision for the future of the wind energy sector, with the goal of making it financially sustainable for the future. The paper presents solutions on how the government can take its role to move this transition challenge forward. Hague also assists Ørsted in discussing these solutions at the highest political levels.

Building Bridges

Ørsted has the knowledge and experience to contribute to the energy transition. The energy transition is currently one of the biggest challenges for politics and business. Hague identifies opportunities for Ørsted to remain not only a market leader but also an innovative pioneer and driving force. The establishment of the Ministry of Climate Green Growth opens up new opportunities for Ørsted and the industry to jointly address challenges in the energy transition. Both politics and business are needed to achieve the energy transition.
