Wieger de Smit

Wieger is an analyst at Hague Corporate Affairs.

After successfully completing his six-month internship, Wieger is now an analyst at Hague. During his internship, he gained a solid foundation in public affairs, and in his current role, he is able to deepen his expertise further.

As an analyst, Wieger has a strong personal interest in geopolitical issues, particularly those with a direct impact on society, such as the energy transition, defence, and technology. He is also highly interested in the decision-making process at the intersection of business and politics—an interest that motivated him to pursue an internship at Hague Corporate Affairs.

Background

Wieger obtained his bachelor’s degree in History at Leiden University before expanding his knowledge with a master’s in International Relations at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. During this master’s programme, he specialised in the European Union’s strategic autonomy and wrote his thesis on the integration of the European defence industry—an relevant topic given rising geopolitical tensions and the deteriorating security situation in Europe.

In addition to his studies, he gained valuable experience as an intern at the VVD party headquarters in The Hague, providing him with insight into political decision-making from the perspective of policymakers.
