Marco Candela is a Doctor in the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology of the University of Bologna. He is the coordinator of CIRCLES – a project funded under the EU Framework Programme for Research & Innovation Horizon 2020. He considers transparent and clear communication in combination with public affairs as essential to level up the research & innovation in Europe.

What is CIRCLES?

CIRCLES is a consortium of thirty organisations coming from fourteen European countries. It takes the lead in bridging the existing knowledge gap with the aim to provide decision-makers, academia, businesses and consumers with a common vision on the impact of microbiomes on food systems, from farm to fork. By tapping into the potential of microbiomes, CIRCLES seeks to ensure that Europeans have access to safe, nutritious, high-quality, and affordable food.

Microbiomes

Should we also mention what microbiomes are? Microbiomes have vital impacts on food systems productivity, quality, safety and sustainability. Taming and using the positive effects of microbiomes is underpinned by the need to understand their nature and the way they interact. This scientific challenge can now be addressed thanks to a recent breakthrough in genomic mapping, robotics and chemical analysis.

Why are communication and public affairs important for research and innovation in the EU?

For Dr. Marco Candela, transparent and clear communication in combination with public affairs is essential to level up the research & innovation in Europe. Why?

“Transparent and clear communication in combination with public affairs is essential to level up the research & innovation in Europe”

Hague is responsible for the dissemination, communication and policy recommendations part of CIRCLES. Through social media, events, ‘City Tours’, sampling activities, and direct interactions we ensure the story of CIRCLES and the knowledge acquired during the project about the microbiome reach decision-makers, civil society, business and scientists.

Together with the other partner organisatioins in CIRCLES, we are convinced that a change in the mindset of Europeans will reinforce their confidence in science and the benefits it could bring. The effect of this will be stronger European research and proliferation of scientific breakthroughs.
